About
A quieter editorial point of view about people, money, overthinking and independent thinking.
A quieter point of view
The writing comes from an introverted, analytical perspective. I like people, but I also like being alone. I can spend a long time thinking about a decision that has real consequences and almost no time worrying because a stranger thought something looked unusual. That contrast is a large part of Maotaw.
What Maotaw writes about
The essays cover overthinking, introversion, confidence, social pressure, money psychology, independence, loneliness, boundaries, work, relationships, decision-making and the strange little rules people follow without always asking why.
Not a performance of certainty
Maotaw is not written from the position of a therapist or an all-knowing expert. Many articles begin with an observation, a contradiction or an ordinary situation and then try to think it through carefully. Personal interpretation is kept separate from established fact where that distinction matters.
The basic attitude
I am interested in consequences more than appearances. If I hurt someone, make a bad financial decision or ignore a real responsibility, that deserves attention. If I eat alone, change my mind, fail in public or do something harmless that looks unusual, I am much less interested in turning it into a crisis.
Why the site exists
A lot of writing tells people how they should feel. I would rather ask whether the feeling deserves the authority it has been given. Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes the useful answer is simply: this is uncomfortable, but it is not actually a problem.
